The Ordinary: Retinoid 2%, Salicylic Acid 2% Solution, Buffet and Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2%

When I saw The Ordinary popping all over my social media feed and mentioned by beauty and skincare gurus everywhere I couldn’t help but be intrigued by the brand. I really like the concept of the line, they offer simple formulas focused on skincare ingredients targeting various skincare concerns. The concept and products are pretty straight forward and the prices are very attractive making the line a good option for skincare novices that and beauty junkies alike. There’s something for everyone in this expanding range and you can easily customize and personalize your skincare routine depending on your needs.

To a skincare novice the line can look intimidating and I know I was overwhelmed at times by the offering. I had to spend a lot of time online researching all the active ingredients and read countless reviews, which is good, I learned a lot and in a way and I was forced to educate myself on a lot of the ingredients in the range. Narrowing down a few products to start off with was challenging, I found myself wanting every product I would read about and had a hard time being objective with myself, I mean, who doesn’t want wrinkle-free, smooth, bright, hydrated, plump, luminous, clear skin?

Given that I always have a TON of skincare to test through I figured it would be wise to start slow so I narrowed it down to four products I could easily introduce into my routine and properly evaluate their efficacy and effects on my skin.

I am in my late 20s and decided it’s a good time to start experimenting with the ultimate anti-aging ingredient: retinol. The Oridnary offers quite the range of different formulas featuring the ingredients in various strengths and I chose to go with Retinoid 2% now know as Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion. The formula claims to be a non irritating form of retinoid while helping with reduction of signs of ageing. I did not experience any irritation when using the product nor did my skin purge or react in any way really. I have used the product for over two months now and have slowly introduced into my routine using it two to three times a week at night. I have been recently experimented with dermarolling and using retinol with it and again, I have had no irritation. I do not have major signs of aging yet but I did notice a slight reduction in this one sun spot I have on my forehead and I think my pores and skin seems a little more refined since introducing this product into my routine. I plan on repurchasing it and continuing use of this product until I am ready to move on to a prescription strength product but I don’t see that happening too soon as I am quite happy with this formula.

I have always loved salicylic acid to help me with breakouts and clogged pores so I was quite excited to try out the Salicylic Acid 2% Solution. This formula features skin soothing Witch Hazel and has the usual claims of exfoliation and helping to fight blemishes. I always found salicylic acid to be extremely effective in fighting breakouts and help oily areas stay clear. That being said I am not a huge fan of this product, I found it to be much less effective than my Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid which will dry up anything overnight. This product has a weird texture that kinda foams when rubbed int the skin and leaves a weird film on the skin after it dries and I just didn’t find it to be as effective as I would have liked it to be. I will continue to use it as I find it’s still somewhat effective but will not repurchase as it doesn’t quite deliver the results I need. If you have sensitive skin and found most salicylic products and toners to be too drying and irritating you might like this proudct and how gentle it is to the skin.

I am not gonna beat around the bush with this one: I LOVE the Buffet serum. This bad boy is packed with amazing skin nourishing ingredients like peptides and hyaluronic acid and I can’t get enough of it. I like to think of this serum as a smoothie for my skin, it instantly moisturizes my skin leaving it plump and glowing and pairs beautifully with other serums or oils. I have a normal skin that tends to get dehydrated and this bad boy is so awesome at keeping it hydrated and quickly made its way into my daily routine and I plan on repurchasing it as soon as I run out. It’s a must have and I can see it as a great choice for any skin type.

I love a good exfoliator and despite having experimented with tons of products for years I chose to start with the milder version of the Ordinary’s formula: the Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2%. I found the formula to very gentle and only experienced very superficial stinging during application at times and if I had been using other exfoliators, manual or chemical, at the same time. I can’t say I was impressed by this formula, I have other products that I found to be much more effective and deliver visible results but that might be because I went too low with the 5%. I am also used to an exfoliator being slightly more aggressive and this formula is incredibly gentle, so I am guessing those that are just starting to dabble into the world of exfoliation and those with very sensitive skin might enjoy this product more than I did. I will not repurchase this product but I will give the stronger versions a try.
